Saint Paul senior Colin McCarthy, son of Thomas and Linda McCarthy of Covington, was selected as the Most Outstanding Louisiana Boys State Citizen of 2006 by his peers and the staff. More than 500 Louisiana students attended the 67th Boys State session this past summer. During the program, Colin gained firsthand knowledge of the inner workings of state and local government. He is serving this year as vice-president of the SPS Student Council.
Mandeville’s Hayley Everett represented Louisiana in the 2006 Southern Team Championships (formerly the Junior Davis Cup) in Chattanooga in September, where her tennis team placed first in the bronze division.
North Oaks Health System offered a community service and career exploration opportunity during the summer to 44 junior volunteers, ages 14-17, who collectively contributed 3,378 service hours during the program. Volunteers commit to a minimum of 40 hours of service for at least six weeks. Pictured is the 2006 class of junior volunteers. Kimberly and George Jackson of Slidell welcomed quadruplets into the world at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in September! The two boys, Connor (3 pounds, 8.2 ounces) and Quinn (3 pounds, 7.8
ounces), and two girls, Charli (3 pounds, 12 ounces) and Ryan (4 pounds, 1 ounce) were doing well after delivery. The Jacksons also have two grown children, and two boys, ages 9 and 10. They joke that their biggest dilemma is how to transport the family. “We’re looking at a 15-passenger van,” says George.
George and Wendy Rodrigue, recently selected as the American Red Cross Humanitarians of the Year, were honored at the organization’s Humanitarian Ball in October. A Red Cross spokesperson said, “George has truly brought the essence of Louisiana to millions of fans and collectors around the world. In our darkest hours, when we face our greatest challenges, George has always come to the rescue.” The proceeds from George’s painting, “We Will Rise Again,” which was featured on the cover of IN’s special Hurricane Katrina issue, raised nearly $500,000 for the Southeast Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross, allowing it to provide crucial services.
In September, the Slidell Art League Gallery held its first Membership Show since Hurricane Katrina. More than 150 attendees enjoyed the 70 pieces of artwork that were displayed. The show was judged by Slidell artist Brad Thompson, shown here with first place winner Bruce Hume, who won for his oil on canvas titled “Lily Pads.”

The Cancer Program of St. Tammany Parish Hospital and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Covington has been granted a three-year approval status with commendation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. The COC approves only about 25 percent of cancer programs in the United States and Puerto Rico. “Earning this distinction means our patients are receiving the highest quality care they could expect [from] anywhere in the United States—right here close to home,” said St. Tammany Parish Hospital Cancer Program director Chryl Corizzo.
Fairway Medical Center recently performed its 25,000th surgery at its Surgical Hospital. CEO David J. Guzan Jr. attributed the recent success to Fairway’s customer service commitment. The center has also been named as one of the top 10 ambulatory surgical centers in the country by Today’s SurgiCenter Magazine.
