There must be something in the water! That’s the only explanation I can find for the multitude of talent we found in seeking out graduating seniors to feature in our “Arts and Smarts” story this issue (page 54). It didn’t take long to compile a list of candidates. What was difficult was choosing the handful of teens you see on these pages, as the list was long and incredibly impressive. Among them were ballerinas, opera singers, theatre actors, media and visual artists and various musicians who were recommended by their school’s guidance counselors, teachers or instructors in their craft. Just as remarkable was the fact that each of the students was also at the top of his or her class in academics; many have received extraordinary scholarships for their hard work and dedication to their studies. Kudos to each of them!
We also applaud the other accomplished students featured in this issue, such as the teams of young scientists who are making a name for themselves in NASA’s FIRST Robotics competition (Tech Talk, page 126). Not to mention an extremely bright group of middle-school kids in Mandeville who have dedicated many after-school hours to learn the French language in preparation for their trip across the Atlantic in a cultural exchange program (Faire Votre Connaissance, page 124). As one of our staff members noted after reading these stories, we have nothing to worry about if our nation’s future is in the hands of kids like these.
Like the story spotlighting seniors, our dedication to dads (page 72) also received a multitude of reader submissions. The letters and photos that came in truly touched my heart. (I still get a lump in my throat when I read eleven-year-old Brandon’s tribute to his Big Brother—the father figure who has had a fantastic influence in his young life.)
I’m so encouraged to see our readers becoming more involved with the content of the magazine. There will be opportunities to do so in each issue, so be sure to make note of any place in the book where you see our “INbox” logo—such as the space on the right. We always look forward to your input and interest!
Congratulations to Covington’s Sheri Allo, winner of last issue’s Word Search.
