Publisher's Note: Something to Cheer About!
by Lori Murphy
There are plenty of things to cheer about at this time of year. The weather, the dance recitals, the flowers in your garden…the list goes on and on. One thing I wouldn’t have thought of—robots! When we were preparing the story on the area teams competing for honors in the robot-building competition, I was surprised. There were photographs of classmates waving signs just as enthusiastically as at a championship football game, cheering on their school’s robot team.
Like this picture of Slidell’s Northshore High students, which made me very happy.
My daughter is one of a small handful of girls who compete for her school in Quiz Bowl competitions. The team doesn’t win championships. They aren’t featured on television as the old Varsity Quiz Bowl teams were, but they work hard and want to win. Such academically oriented activities do not usually draw the sign-waving cheering crowds the robot teams did, although they certainly deserve the same level of support.
So, I say: Go, Nuts and Volts! Go, Quiz Bowl! Go, Mock Trial! Go, Mathletes! Go! Fight! Win!
And, congratulations to those school administrations that strive to instill pride in ALL student endeavors. Keep up the great work!
p.s. Beaucoup cheers for all moms, dads and grads!
