Publisher's Note:
Holiday Wishes

by Lori Murphy

It is hard to believe the holidays are sneaking up on us. This summer seemed faster than most, but it barely holds a candle to the speed of this fall. I was just finishing the school supply list when mid-terms rolled around. Between the football season, political campaigns, “great cause” parties galore and a busy work schedule, the fall is enough to give me whiplash. I am wishing for a holiday season filled with more desires than requires. I am going to give myself the gift of a few rainchecks and a couple of passes till “after the first of the year.”

One staple of the holiday season that all parents have come to expect is the “Wish List.” Our daughters are too old to sit on Santa’s lap, but the list has lasted and it can be very helpful. The list defines expectations. They may not get everything on the list, but at least you know what kinds of things will matter. Over the years, I’ve spent more money on things I “just knew they would love” than on what they actually wanted. Big mistake, because you still have to get the list items. Maybe you can bargain… “Do you want this more than item #5?”

During wish-list-season, it’s important to be creative. I especially like it when I can push things I’d buy anyway onto the list. For instance, alarm clocks. My daughters need them in the worst way. They are in high school—and Dad still wakes them up every morning! Girls old enough to drive themselves to school should be able to set an alarm. I am going to push for the clocks to be on the list. I will splurge on fun, brightly colored models and buy my husband a little more snooze time!

Who wouldn’t put a head-to-toe makeover on their wish list? One of our lucky readers is going to get just that! See the back of the gatefold for complete information on our New Year, New You contest. Don’t miss the November 15 nomination deadline. The candidate will be selected on November 16, and the whirlwind re-do will begin!

This fun idea was brought to us by Botox and Juvederm, who have assembled some top-flight talent. We are happy to play a part in giving one lucky reader such a special gift in time for the holidays. I wish I could win. I hope you do!
Start your wish list early…Happy Holidays!
