Inside Northside on the Web

From the Editor: Hope Springs Eternal

by Jan Murphy

I doubt that the poet Alexander Pope intended to connect hope with the season of spring, but I certainly do. Spring not only brings rebirth and new life to our natural world, but seems to imbue us with new energy and a sense of optimism.

This issue of Inside Northside certainly contains many signs of life and hope. Habitat’s Women Build 2008. Cancer Relay for Life volunteers. PEO helping women. The I-12 corridor. The Children’s Hospital Sugarplum Ball. Foster families. Madisonville’s growth. And our Scoop section had so many activities listed that we used a shoehorn and still couldn’t fit in all the signs of life that surround us.

But, if you blink, you might miss one sign of life and hope—the one that might be the most important of all. Look carefully at page 85. Down at the bottom. A small ad—but what potential! Kids Wanna Help-Lemonade Brigade was formed by kids for kids to help them start their own business and raise money for charities. IN first introduced our readers to Mary Brent Brown, the remarkable 12-year-old who spearheads this endeavor, in our November-December article “Angels among Us.” The Young Business Owner Workshop is just a next step set forth in the group’s impressive business plan. This summer will see the fruits of the workshop as lemonade stands and other kid-run businesses begin earning money for charity. Stay tuned—we certainly are, and we’re fully expecting to be amazed again.

May this special season gift you with hope and life.
