Publisher's Note

by Lori Murphy

When I began publishing Inside Northside four years ago, many who knew me wondered what in the world a banker might know about running a magazine. I’d worked for ten years on the northshore, introducing myself to everyone as a banker. Suddenly, I was a publisher? As much as I enjoyed my role as a banker, I’d fallen in love with magazine publishing in 1983. My change in vocation was actually a return to the field I’d entered right out of college.

The stories that Karen Gibbs shares in her “Second Chances” have the same double-take effect. Sometimes it is adjusting our sails that leads to happiness and success.

One of our long-time clients, Al Navia of Destiny Custom Homes, also had a change in vocation. Before he was a builder, he was managing partner of some of the best late-night haunts in the city. Maybe it is not that surprising when you consider that making people feel right at home is the hallmark of great hospitality venues, too.

It’s nomination time! Do you know a woman who has not only excelled in her professional field, but also has shown a commitment of service to the northshore community? Why not nominate her for the 2005 Business Woman of the Year award? Congratulations to Maura Donahue, a past recipient of the honor. She was recently tapped to lead the U.S. Chamber of Commerce!

Enjoy what’s left of summer!

Lori
