From the Editor

by Stacey Paretti Rase

I remember loving this time of year when I was a kid. Sure, I’d nod my head in agreement when my friends bemoaned the beginning of another school year. But secretly, I really couldn’t wait for classes to begin–to see old friends, to meet new ones, to find out who my homeroom teacher was and to wear my new “back to school” clothes.

I attended all four Mandeville public schools: Mandeville Elementary, Middle, Junior High and High Schools. Those were the only public schools in the city back then! I have such wonderful memories of my school days and of the many inspiring teachers who led my way. Mr. Joe Soto, my high school chemistry and physics teacher, was one such teacher. He fostered my love of science–it was as though a light bulb came on in my brain when he explained the periodic table! I’m delighted that he’s featured in this issue’s “Honor Roll.”

To add to my late summer excitement, I am anxiously awaiting the approaching football season. I might look like a frilly girl, but I become downright ferocious on a fall Saturday night in Death Valley. Interviewing Joel Champagne, local LSU fanatic, for this issue’s “Keepers” was great fun. And it was an absolute honor to visit with LSU’s new football coach, Les Miles. Those of you whose blood runs more green and gold than purple and gold won’t want to miss our feature on Southeastern’s first-year football coach, Dennis Rolland, who is ready to take on the Southland Conference.

Here’s to new beginnings!

PS: All of us at IN express our condolences to Sandra Juneau, who recently lost her mother. We hope to see her column, Bonne Bouchee, return in our next issue.

Congratulations to Mandeville’s Carol Kirkland, the winner of our June/July Word Search!
