Warm Welcometle

At first look, it appears that Calla Walker’s Greek Revival cottage in Mandeville has celebrated Christmas on this same spot for a hundred years.

Lovely old trees frame the graceful front porch, bedecked with festive garlands. As you walk into the front hallway, you are certain the house is vintage. The aura of authenticity, however, comes from Calla’s extensive knowledge of New Orleans architecture and construction that she used to create her beautiful new home. Tall ceilings, large baseboards and triple French doors all add to the ambiance. The polished wood floors are covered with exquisite rugs, while silk draperies frame the tall windows.

During the holidays, Calla creates an inviting setting for family and friends to gather. For her party, the back deck is tented so guests can circulate easily. Beside the French doors, she skirts a round table. The tree is decorated with special ornaments she has collected all of her life; two cherished crêpe paper and tulle ornaments, made by a family friend more than 50 years ago, remain favorites from her childhood.

Brightly colored ornaments nestle in fresh greenery on the mantel. Beside the fireplace, two kittens wait patiently for Santa next to bright-red amaryllis. A fire in the hearth and candlelight add warmth to the serene setting.

The gold leaf mirror in the dining room, flanked by tall topiaries, reflects a prancing reindeer. Calla sets the antique table with St. Nicholas china and Waterford crystal, which add elegance and sparkle. A sumptuous Christmas feast is served on the long table amid the beautiful gold and silver trimmings. Many of her exquisite pieces were carefully chosen from Rug Chic, which is family owned.

Calla Walker’s unpretentious style fills her home with beauty and grace for this traditional holiday season.
