The Slidell Symphony Society

by Kimberly Sanders Vanderbrook
Plato said, “Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”

For the past thirty years, the Slidell Symphony Society has been giving music to the northshore. The society pools hard work, partial grant funding from the city of Slidell, and support from the community to bring the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra to St. Tammany for a holiday concert in December and an annual Spring Classic Concert, this year scheduled for April 1.

Music has a magical power to lift our spirits, to make us think and to take us back in time. Once music is admitted to the soul, it becomes part of the fabric of our lives. The society’s mission, to bring the magic of music to the children of the parish, is grounded in the belief that an early introduction to classical music and education about it can lead to a lifelong love of music.

To fulfill this mission, each year the society brings the Youth Community Orchestra to fourth graders to introduce them to the concepts of instruments and an orchestra. It also organizes and sponsors free Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra Concerts that are specially written and conducted for students in grades 1-12; teachers are given classroom learning materials to enrich the concert experience. And because it is never too early to spark the love of music in children, three free concerts specifically designed for preschoolers help instill in them an early appreciation for music.

For a wonderful musical experience, mark your calendar for the Spring Classic Concert on April 1, and consider volunteering your time to the Slidell Symphony Society. Dr. Russell Westfall and his wife, Nancy, the chairpersons for the 2004-2005 season, have planned many benefits and patron parties throughout the year to supplement the shrinking grant dollars that make the work of the Slidell Symphony Society possible. Among the events are the society’s Salon Concerts—memorable evenings of food, music and fellowship for a worthy cause.

See You at the Symphony!
