My bad memory is a running joke in our family. I’ve bought tickets to movies I’ve already seen. I’ll ask my husband to take me somewhere for dinner because I’ve heard so many good things about it—only to have him remind me that we’d eaten there before. If not for photographs, I’m afraid I’d have no memory at all! It’s a handicap that I blame on Diet Coke.
Photographs are memories to be relived and shared. When we ran old photos in our holiday issue, I was glad to hear how much everyone enjoyed them. We decided to take another trip down memory lane in this issue. The focus: high school prom.
When I went through the box I rescued from my Mom’s attic and found a picture from the LHS Prom of 1979, it did take me back. I remembered dinner at La Louisianne; that our band cancelled at the last minute and we attended another prom being held that evening. My grandmother made my dress out of material that was the perfect hue—we learned from the “Color Me Beautiful” book that it was all the rage.
My prom date is now known as Jim, lives in The Woodlands and is raising three sons. In light of the purple ruffles on his shirt, I thought it only fair to ask his permission to include this picture. I assured him that the color of my stockings was the most glaring nod to “Thank goodness that’s not in fashion anymore!” But, as is made clear in the Prom story on page 58, fashions may come and go, but some things never change. Prom is still the memory-maker it was for my generation. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures!
p.s. In anticipation of the summer wedding season, our May-June issue will include a look at trousseaux. If you have cherished items to share—or photographs—please call us at (985) 626-9684.
