Alfresco Living
Designing an outdoor living space that adds to the enjoyment of your home as well as expanding your entertaining options is a hot topic this spring. Whether you choose a patio with a striking outdoor kitchen, a formal pool with a surrounding terrace or a true extension of your family room, as these homeowners did, the new spaces should complement your lifestyle. These flexible “rooms” can be designed to accommodate intimate family gatherings or grand affairs. Furnishing options are endless, featuring durable fabrics and woods to harmonize with every style. There is a broad palette of materials and an infinite array of accessories to choose from that will set just the right tone.

Entertaining in the South has always revolved around the kitchen. Patios and decks outfitted with fine kitchen equipment can turn your outdoor room into an oasis for entertaining and relaxation. Maxie LeBlanc loves to cook for friends. He says, “It seems more important than ever to make your home a place where you can relax with family, entertain friends and escape from the stress of every day life.”

Maxie’s new outdoor kitchen features a bar across the front to keep him in the middle of the action while he works. The striking cantilevered roof gives the space intimacy without shutting off the view from the multiple balcony levels of the home. The stonework of the bar and patio, installed by Outdoor Solutions, add warmth to the design. The design of your alfresco living space should take into account the style of the house and the surrounding garden, and the purpose it is to serve. A large patio may not be necessary if you plan only intimate gatherings with family or a few friends. However, if you like large parties, or live in an area featuring expansive views of a river or other natural features—a large pool deck and patio may be more suitable for your situation.

The Sandersons, owners of this stately Mediterranean style home on Three Rivers Road, worked with landscape architect Eduardo Jenkins to create their large outdoor entertaining space. The infinity pool and surrounding terrace complement the Remson and Haley architecture. The formal structure of the design is balanced by the bountiful view of its position at the meeting of the Tchefuncte, Bogue Falaya and Abita rivers. The area creates a perfect transition from the home to the beautiful natural setting.

Blending the line between indoors and out is the hallmark of this stunning outdoor kitchen and family room in the family home of Frank and Karen Simeon. The room features every amenity you would expect to find inside—with the added benefits of a splash of sunlight, the sparkle of the pool and the breezes from the adjacent golf course. The kitchen, with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, looks directly out into the pool lanai. The upholstered furniture of the seating area blends seamlessly with the colors and textures of the spa and pool in the adjoining space. The pair of dolphins that highlight the pool add both visual interest and the soothing sounds of falling water to the calming environment.

Open-air living spaces can transform your home and the way you live in it. Your options are only limited by your imagination. Take advantage of the natural beauty of our northshore landscapes, add elbow room for a growing family and expand your entertaining options with a well-appointed outdoor room. It is an investment in your home and your lifestyle!
