Hyatt Hood

by Vicky Bayley
When Hyatt Hood graduated from Spring Hill College with a degree in communications, he was an avid free-lance photographer. He dreamed of moving to New York or Los Angeles and having a career in advertising or the film industry. As luck would have it, Frances “Sis” Leake, former executive director of the St. Tammany Parish Tourist Commission, hired him to take pictures for the commission. Ms. Leake liked his pictures - and also convinced him to give up his dreams of the big city and accept the executive director position.

Why did you accept the position with the tourist commission?

I was helping Sis set up the film commission and I realized I could be more involved and have more input here than I ever could in a larger city.

What are your best characteristics?

I am very level headed. I approach challenges with a logical method. I am not emotional about issues.

What is your greatest achievement?

Being a father. Children transform your life.

What do you want to teach your daughter, Isabella?

To have a sense of humor. Be open-minded, and do not pre-judge.

Who are your heroes?

I was close to my parents’ friends. I really admired Representative Edward Deano. I worked with him at the capitol. He approached public service in a very honest, caring way, and he also had a great sense of humor.

Do you have roadblocks in your profession?

Politics do play into the picture. Trying to make everyone happy and pursue the mission can be difficult.

How do you want to be remembered?

I’m uncomfortable flattering myself, but I am proud of my career and accomplishments in the commission. My success in this business is not entirely my own; I work with extremely talented people.

What do you do in your free time?

Spend time with my family. I also have a 36-year-old car I tinker with, and I still love photography. Computers and technology really interest me.

Where is the most amazing place you have visited?

My grandmother took me on a cruise around the world, and I have traveled to the most fascinating destinations - but I would have to say America’s Pacific Northwest.

What kind of friend are you?

A forever friend.

Do you have a faith?

I have never participated in a church; it is not that important to me. I see the beauty of nature and the outdoors as miracles. I grew up on the river and I care about the community. I live my life to be the best I can be.
