If you are looking for a great couple’s getaway, consider Tucson, Arizona. The setting couldn’t be more different from our own. With cactus and mountains, pebbled front yards and wide-open blue skies, southern Arizona is a step into another world. The treasures of the area are both natural and man-made. Beneath the arid Chihuahuan Desert, visitors can tour a good portion of the breathtaking Kartchner Caverns. This very rare, seven-acre “living,” or wet, cave includes spectacular formations, unusual mineralogy and immense underground spaces. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and the Saguaro National Parks showcase the unique flora and fauna of the area. Shopping for colorful art is another rewarding exploration. In addition to the American Indian influence that fills shops with jewelry, furniture and textiles, there are several great venues for Middle Eastern art and furnishings. An excellent choice for a resort that mirrors the natural environment is the Westin La Paloma. Nestled in the foothills of Tucson’s Santa Catalina Mountains, the La Paloma features cascading pools and meandering walkways that make it a very special place. Bursts of orange and red layer the gardens that are filled with plants we don’t often see in southern Louisiana. Southwestern mission revival architecture complements the desert terrain and provides the backdrop for every resort amenity you could imagine. The Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course is a must for duffers. The arid climate makes the manicured green spaces of the course an irresistible haven for the long-eared jackrabbits that dart out without warning or sit quietly in the shadows of the century-old saguaro cactus. The greens are a lush contrast to their surroundings. After the
round of golf, or perhaps in lieu of it, consider a sensuous massage or
replenishing facial. Located on the resort property, The Elizabeth Arden
Red Door Spa is an oasis for even the most seasoned spa enthusiast. At
the Red Door, standard pedicures have given way to little luxuries like
the Desert Stone - culled from an ancient American Indian treatment. This
very personal retreat is designed to nurture your body, mind and spirit.
