When you pick up the phone do you think of art? You might after visiting Ekhaya Interiors to see the unique collection of objects crafted by the Telkom Ucingo Project in South Africa. The colorfully coated wire from telephone lines is crafted into an array of domestic and ritual artifacts. Using ancient techniques and new raw materials talented women weave a future for themselves in the process.

Similar to the pine straw baskets of South Carolina, the small bowls are the most common creations. The brightly colored wire takes on the form with lively surprises in design. "These women are inspiring, as well as talented," says Pemmie Sheasby of Ekyaha. "I am thrilled to be a part of the effort to bring their talent to this country."

The telephone wire is twisted, plaited, knotted and knitted to produce endless variations of this unique art form. Based on the Imbenge theme, some items incorporate copper wire and beadwork to enhance the presentation.

The art of these wire weavers will change your view of a telephone call forever.
