The past lingers
visibly in Ponchatoula. Vivid memories of earlier times come to life in the
antique stores that abound in the downtown area. The wide variety of antiques
and collectibles and the expertise of the stores owners make Ponchatoula
the perfect destination for the dedicated antique lover.
More than 40
antique and retail shops, restaurants and art galleries are conveniently located
in and around the turn-of-the-century historic district. Ponchatoula has an
allure known to few other places.
Going slowly
from store to store will add unusual depth to a day. The range of items displayed
is staggering: from marbles chipped by a childs play to precious, beautifully
dressed porcelain dolls; from jewelry to dining tables ready for the fine
china and silver that are readily available.
In addition to
antiquing, Ponchatoula has much to offer its visitors. The 25-year-old Country
Market, housed in the old depot, is filled with hand-made crafts and homemade
specialty foods that are unique to the area. The Collinswood Museum contains
a large collection of items that depict the citys history including
its Native American roots, the railroad, agriculture, and the cypress mill.
Nature trails and the Joyce Wildlife Management Area provide opportunities
for cycling, walking, bird watching, and nature photography. The renowned
Strawberry Festival in the spring attracts more than 200,000 people.
There is a happy
spirit in Ponchatoula, and an appreciation of not only what is, but also what
has been. But you have to go there to experience it.
