A Covering of Quilts

by Margaret Hawkins
Downtown Ponchatoula will literally be covered with quilts on October 16 when the Berry Patch Quilt & Art Expo, in connection with Fanfare 2004, showcases several hundred handmade works hanging from balconies and shop entrances.

An indoor paid-admission exhibit of artistic and antique quilts at Le Fleur de Lis on North Sixth Street will include numerous specialty pieces. The star of the show is a 15-foot quilt that has been featured in numerous national shows; it uses half-inch squares of fabric to depict Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper.” Admission charge is $7; children under 12, free.

Nationally recognized quilt artisans and celebrities will teach classes and present lectures on October 15 and 16.

This is the third year for the event, which is organized by eight women quilters from the Ponchatoula area who have formed BerryPatch Productions, Inc. Detailed information about the expo, including a complete schedule of events, can be found at berrypatchproductions.com, or call (225) 294-2673.t
